After losing one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history, Argentina will advance to the knockout stage as group winners. Unfortunately for Mexico, Argentina only missed a few goals to succeed.
Here’s everything that happened at the World Cup on Wednesday and what to watch for on Thursday.
Tunisia 1, France 0
France will enter the round of 16 with a defeat to their name after Antoine Griezmann’s last-minute equalizer was flagged offside by VAR. Lucky for Blues, a 1-0 loss was not enough to knock them out of first place in Group D, or move Tunisia forward. He will continue to play against Poland on Sunday (10 a.m. ET on FS1 and the FOX Sports app).

Mexico came close to doing whatever it took to advance to the round of 16, but their yellow cards and Saudi Arabia’s late goal eventually knocked them out of the tournament. Mexico’s seven-game tournament streak to qualify for the knockout stage is now complete. Saudi Arabia were also eliminated with the result.

GOAL OF THE DAY
If that had been the goal that got Mexico through to the knockout stages, it would have been one of the greatest goals ever. The threelong history of the World Cup. Instead, it’s just our focus for the day. Say hello, Luis Chávez.
SAVE OF THE DAY
Any of Wojciech Szczęsny’s saves could have been the save of the day, but every time you register a penalty taken by arguably the greatest player of all time, it’s worth highlighting.
On the night, Szczęsny made nine saves, eight of them from shots fired inside the box.
Croatia vs Belgium10 a.m. ET on *FOX
Croatia’s path to the knockout stage is simple: win or draw, and it’s on. That of Belgium is much more complicated. While it could also advance with a win or a draw, a draw would have to come with a win for Canada over Morocco – and even then it would go to a tiebreaker with Morocco based on differential goals, a category in which Morocco has a two-goal advantage.
Canada v Morocco10 a.m. ET on *FS1
Belgium aren’t the team Morocco should worry about going into a tiebreaker with, for all the aforementioned reasons. Croatia, on the other hand, pose a serious threat in case Morocco lose to Canada and Belgium beat Croatia, as Croatia currently have the advantage in goal differential. Suffice to say that Morocco prefers to win or draw.
Japan vs Spain2 p.m. ET on *FOX
The only scenario in which Spain does not advance is a win by Japan and a victory by Costa Rica against Germany, which on paper is unlikely. However, Japan have already pulled off an upset in this year’s tournament and Costa Rica is coming off a win against Japan. The Red would be wise not to tempt fate.
Costa Rica vs. Germany2 p.m. ET on *FS1
Germany need a win and a win for Spain against Japan to avoid being knocked out in the group stage for the second consecutive World Cup. If Costa Rica wins, they will be there no matter what happens in Japan-Spain.
